Practical Recovery is a non-12-step program. It uses a highly individualized, self-empowering approach to addiction treatment and recovery.  The program  views “self-empowering” as meaning that the power to change lies within the individual. It is not found in another person,  group, or Higher Power.

Practical RecoveryThe program helps those who want full recovery instead of being “in recovery” for the rest of their lives. It has a number of locations in the San Diego area of Southern California. .

Client treatment plans are often very different from each other. That’s because they are individually tailored for each client’s needs. Residential length of stay is also flexible. It offers choice of therapists, private bedrooms, and complete access to cell phones and e-devices. Most sessions are private rather than group. Non-residential clients have choice of therapists, individual sessions if desired, and a totally flexible schedule. The program focuses heavily on the unique needs of each client.

In addition to alcoholism, Practical Recovery helps clients with a number of other problems. These include sex addiction, gambling addiction, and other problems experienced by clients. It offers special programs for women and for families. The program also offers sober living facilities.

Almost all of the clinical staff members have earned Ph.D. or Psy.D. degrees. All are fully licensed professionals. Detox is available for those needing it. Practical Recovery is approved for payments by major insurance companies. These include companies such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Aetna, Humana, Cigna, and UnitedHealthCare.

Dr. Tomas Horvath, founder of the program, is an expert on addiction treatment. He has served as president of SMART Recovery and of the Society of Addiction Psychology. That is the largest organization of addiction psychologists in the world. He is the author of  Sex, Drugs, Gambling, & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming Addictions.
